Canada Welcomes Afghan Refugees

Newfoundland and Labrador has welcomed just over 100 new residents.

A plane carrying 116 Afghan refugees arrived in St. John’s last night.

Minister of Immigration, Gerry Byrne made the announcement in the House of Assembly this afternoon, indicating that work is already underway to welcome the families into the community and have them settled in new permanent homes.

Byrne says the federal government decided to direct this group of Afghan refugees to St. John’s, knowing that they would be “welcomed with open arms.”

Byrne says the people who arrived last night are among those who “stood up and stood out” to oppose political tyranny in Afghanistan.

“They, and the families that accompany them, deserve our steadfast respect and support” Byrne told the House of Assembly.
