As Asian women, our voice needs to be heard. Why Canada needs to make space for us at decision-making tables

As we know, COVID-19 has heightened the issue of anti-Asian racism and the need to confront it. #StopAsianHate has been trending after the loss of eight people, six of them Chinese and Korean women targetted in the Atlanta shooting. Our elders continue to be pushed and attacked on the streets. More than 1,100 cases of harassment and physical attacks were reported in a year according to the Chinese Canadian National Council.

Sadly, this is not a new issue. Historically and presently, Asian Canadians have been shunned, attacked and forgotten in Canada’s institutions.

As one of our writers Christine Le shares; Although I am Canadian born, the education system almost failed me. In elementary school, teachers placed me in the Special Education stream to improve my speaking skills. However, my issue was not about skills but about confidence. Had my mother not written a letter to my school advocating to switch me back into the regular stream in Grade 5, my education would have been stunted.
