Changes to U.S., Canadian immigration in 2021
The highlights of Canada’s immigration plan recognize the importance of reuniting families and protecting foreign refugees. These include:
increasing immigration over the next three years to make up for 2020 shortfalls;
a continued focus on economic growth, allocating 60 per cent of immigrants to the Economic Class;
creating an innovative community approach to diversify labour and demographics;
plans to digitize Canada’s immigration system to better process applicants and break through COVID barriers to immigration;
additional Express Entry points for French-speaking candidates to support growth of Francophone communities throughout Canada;
plans to admit up to 500 refugees and help them apply for permanent residence through existing channels;
creating a pathway to permanent residency for eligible asylum seekers who worked on the front lines of the pandemic, providing direct care during select dates from March through August 2020.
